I built oss4 from source, using this guide:

I ended up re-installing Ubuntu as this problem came from a somewhat
newer install any ways. Thanks for the quick response!

Updated to OSS 4, sound is distorted now (Other gstreamer apps are working fine
that's not an ubuntu bug but an user installation issue
