I am not using any special drivers or compiz. The computer is a
Compaq EVO D51S with integrated video card. There are no special
drivers loaded other than what Ubuntu and it's upgrades installs. When
I referred to gibberish, it is not unrecognisable characters, but rather
scrambled information
not here, which video card do you have and which driver are you using?
are you running compiz ? does it happens without it?
