Sorry for my late reply. I've made a couple of updates since I filed the
bug, and been using Xgl/Compiz since.
But now, back in ordinary Xorg/Metacity, I find the problem is
apparently fixed.

What version of libgtk2.0-0 do you use? The new version has a xaa
workaround that fix some simular issues, is that the case for you?

Yes, I have an ATI card.
Maybe it\s an x.org issue, I don\t know much about that. I just noted
that when I kill nautilys the background draws correctly, that\s why I
suspected Nautils.
