I changed wireless driver to Atheros netathw.inf when I run sudo lshw
-C network I no longer get unclaimed, but network manage will not come
up still.

Try : sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules.
It will add the atheros kernel modules which is missing. After this,
just use Hardware drivers and reboot. Wireless Network should be
recognized.

I tried: sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules
I'm not sure what you meant by using the hardware drivers. I shows under:
System, Administration,
Hardware drivers. That I have a Ubuntu diver installed for wireless that is
active.
