I was having a major processor spike with loads going up to 10+. I
disabled that, restarted the app, and I've since had no issues with it.

It works with ALSA now.
So the bug is that if PA is not available (for whatever reason... I
don't have it running, yet sound options pointed to it, and everything
worked fine. Quite messed up but hey it worked), Rhythmbox should say
the cause of the problem?

could you give details on your audio configuration? is pulseaudio
running and working with other sound softwares? what music and video
option is configured in the gnome-sound-properties capplet?

PulseAudio isn't running (I don't know why, but I don't mind - sound in
Flash, games, and other players works just fine).
