I have been trying a couple of things and here are the results:
Uninstalled gthumb (version 2.10.10) and then re-installed it. This did
not make a difference.
I renamed the .comments directory, then opened gthumb. Obviously no
comments were present. When I click a photo, it creates a comment file
Attached to this message is the "after" screenshot, where you can see
that after I simply clicked the photo, the comment is removed.

I copied one directory with photos to a sandbox area. When I simply
select a photo the "comment" and "place" information disappears, however
the "Date" information stays. I have attached two screenshots. One is
before I click the third photo and the other screenshot is after I
simply clicked the ph
