This problem effects me too. I tried installing a metacity theme packed in a
tar.gz archive by dragging it over the appearance preferences window. The theme
looked like it was going to install but it didn't and crashed the appearance
preferences.
I am using Ubuntu desktop-i386 daily-build
Tried to install a theme. The first one worked right after start up but
when i tried to install the second it crashed. After it crash every time
i try to install until i restart and i can install one more.

Tried to install icon set on Jaunty Alpha 6 through appearance manager - got
this error.
