I have same problem. After a fresh install of Dapper the on-board SiS sound
card is set as default. Go to System-->Preferences-->Sound The default sound
card is listed as SiS Sl7012. Try to change to C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC8.
Change accepted but not saved upon exit. Sound card immediately
Can you please do the following:
rm ~/.asound*
Then please open the audio selector and choose the other sound card.
Then please copy&paste the output of the following commands here:
asoundconf is-active; echo $?
asoundconf get defaults.pcm.card
asoundconf list
Thanks!

After moving those files away, chaging sounds cards works fine. Below is the
info you asked for, if it's still interesting.

Thanks for checking again. If it works now, then I suspect an earlier and
broken dapper version of control-center messed up the file somehow. Sorry.
BTW, you should upgrade to the latest dapper version and do the process again,
since your version did not yet set '!defaults.ctl.card AudioPCI'; th
This issue appears to be re-ocurring since I recently updated some alsa-
related packages. Removing the ~/.asound* files doesn't appear to help.
