I'm using Karmic, fully updated to 26/01/10.
The 'Too many failed...' message is no more, but the bug is still there, I
click 'print' on evince, the little printer icons shows up on the notification
area, and disappear.
Thats the error in /var/log/cups/error_log:

It seems to me that this bug is fixed in Karmic. In my company, we used
to get this bug regularly on our Ubuntu desktops, but, since the upgrade
to Karmic, we don't see the famous message "Too many failed attempts"
any more.

Every software has its developing process, and this includes finding bugs and
fixing the bugs.
While a software has a bug, packagers (and/or developer) need to look for
alternatives, and publish software that does what it says.

solve the bug. It's advised not to rant, blame developers, tell why you
do not use this or that, or talk about end-of-the-world situations. The

Happily using Mac OS X for printing, so I'm not bothered with Evince

I think this bug is important for evince usage (not grave though), but
fixing it isn't easy.
OTOH suggested workaround (lpr)
The terminal command:
lpr mydocument.pdf
prints quickly a document to the default printer and with the default options.
Evince may replace its "Print" button with a direct comand as lpr.

This means that novice users will be going for a whole year potentially
unable to print PDFs. That's a disaster. :-(

Can anyone reproduce this in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)?
Support for CUPS authorization was only recently added to GTK+ in version
2.17.0 (first distributed in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic). Before this if CUPS requested
authorization GTK+ would repeatedly connect until "Too many failed attempts"
would occur.

I rely that the updates workflow will give to all users the aimed update
(with the first Karmic or posterior updates), but the "Importance" field
needs to mark a HIGH PRIORITY, for the reasons explained by Gannin.

Once again, I would like to propose an emergency fix for this before
Karmic comes out. I am no developer, but it appears to be as simple as
finding the function that is the equivalent of "bool
CheckForTooManyFailedAttempts()" and hack it to always return false.

1. Find a big, complex PDF file. I went to http://news.google.com and printed
off the whole thing to a 5 page PDF file, about 1.5 MB in size.

I'm surprised this bug is marked as low, as I would think not being able
to print PDF documents would be a major usability issue. It's the sort
of frustration that could send someone scrambling back to some other OS.

Just a quick idea: Wouldn't it be easiest to just completely disable the
code that checks for the "Too many failed attempts" condition? The
condition is being erroneously detected, and it can't do damage if it
tries to print no matter what.

trying to print a document quickly and run out the door to an
appointment, this bug is the most infuriating thing possible. I know
someone who is thinking about switching back to Windows from Ubuntu,

I'm seeing this too on an up-to-date 32-bit Jaunty install. Printing
works sometimes. Other times, even printing the same PDF from evince it
fails and I see errors like this in /var/log/cups/error_log:
