I can confirm this on Dapper Beta 2. I tried to (s)trace the gdmgreeter and it
is for sure not trying to fork anything.
SonWon and Ferrat, you have some other problems, see for instance bug #42299.

I have a Mitac 8355 and the hibernate and suspend both do not work.
Laptop shuts down but starts up normally instead of going back to
previous screens.

Same problem here. It already has worked in an early state of dapper. Now the
sleep.sh comes to this point:
echo -n standby >/sys/power/state
bash: echo: write error: Die Ressource ist zur Zeit nicht verfügbar
(means that the ressource isn't available)

I can confirm this on my system as well - I have a fresh Dapper
Beta+updates install, and while sleep/hibernate work wonderfully from
within Gnome and/or using the /etc/acpi/* scripts, selecting either
option from GDM does nothing.

Could this be related to the 'gdm' user not having priviledges to suspend or
hibernate, perhaps? I'm not sure...
In any case, can we temporarily remove suspend and hibernate from the GDM menu?

I'm also having a similar bug, sleep just wakes up directly, the screen just
goes out then it starts again, Hibernate works but getting out of it doesn't

Is this related to the fact there is no root account on ubuntu?
