I know that warren (gaim's packager for RH and FC) spent a long time on
this bug when it first started showing up on RH and FC systems.
Unfortunately, I don't have any of the bugzilla numbers involved. But
I'm pretty sure the resultant fix was in a patch to arts, not to libao.

Yeah, this was a libao bug. A lot of people hit it with the Fedora
package of Gaim, but they have since fixed their libao package. I don't
know if they fixed it by patching their current version or by getting a
new version from upstream libao. I tried to find a Redhat bugzilla bug#
for it, but

I'd say libao, but I believe upstream isn't maintaining it anymore or
something...

Sorry. My problem was not related to having ESD disabled, it was because I have
decided to install qtparted which installed some qt/kde related libs. Gaim was
using the Autodetect option which I guess will make it to try to use arts (I
guess there was some qtparted dependency related to it). I
Should that bug be reassigned to some KDE package? or libao?

I would like just to add that I have also experienced this problem (I get the
same debug message, but gaim exits, does not crash).
On my case the problem was after disabling ESD on system settings.

Thanks for your bug. What version of Ubuntu and gaim do you use? Could you get
a backtrace of the crash?

That's not a crash that's why there is no backtrace. Do you run gaim as root?
Are you using KDE? It's weird it tries to create a /root/.kde/socket-ubuntu
since Ubuntu uses GNOME and has not root account, did you tweak that?

This is quite likely that bug we always see with libao. It tries to use aRts
when it shouldn't.

that mcop debug line always indicates that libao is trying to use arts. you
can force it to use something else as per the gaim faq at gaim.sf.net/faq.php
and this crash will go away.
