this issue is no longer happening. I'm still on the same hardware - toshiba satellite amd 64 turion with ati radeon graphics I'm running UBUNTU Karmic 64 bit and use the ati/amd fglrx driver found under hardware drivers. The Visual effects are on extra. I use awn and shiny switcher. I also switch
