For the lurkers or anyone else having this problem with a 2nd gen macbook, do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US (Reset the SMC on the laptop). This will fix the battery issue at the hardware level allowing gnomes power management to work correctly. Sorry about digging up
