Karmic need more features as change the gdm background that the little
details make a nice distro.

Not that this would solve the issue, but I think quite a few
configuration features were removed from the GUI in karmic.

yes I know but newbie people wouldn't know how to do it, we need a GUI
option in gdmsetup

You can set a new background picture from the command line (as user
root)
sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set --type string --set
/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /data/pictures/Grassy.jpg

I can confirm this bug as well. But, after choose my username and put my
password, the gnome desktop don't work. Just appear a xterm, where I can run
the commands.
