I totally agree. We should have more backgrounds installed with a
standard installation of Ubuntu. When I've got a first look at Ubuntu
when I just installed it I got the same feeling.
I think it is a great plus, also in the aspect of user friendlyness, to
have more backgrounds to choose from. Esp
I'm inclined to not put them into ubuntu-artwork, as it is rather big
already, but would like to create a new package with community
contributed artwork. This should be discussed on the ubuntu-art list.

I confirm that currently there is only one background image available for the
users to choose from in Ubuntu/Gnome.
As for the "different background for each virtual desktop " issue, it is
already reported in Bug 18397.
