I just noticed that the whole desktop is broken. Program Icons and
Documents aren't shown anymore, i've got only a black desktop (panels

I have this bug, too on i386. I've recently upgraded from jaunty to
karmic and now it shows only a black background, cannot change it.
Here's what is printed in the ~/.xsession-errors file:
(gnome-appearance-properties:3769): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_display_sync:
assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)

any transition effects.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. I have tried this bug on a x86 processor with the latest
package updates. I was able to change the desktop background picture,
