I had similar, but not identical symptoms after a recent upgrade of Dapper 6.06LTS to Edgy 6.10. Nautilus would not show me any icon images as an ordinary user, only as root. I could not open them either. Nor could I see them in the icon browser (eg: via launcher properties). I also had similar
