Binary package hint: gdm
On Karmic alpha 5, sometimes GDM doesn't show the list of users on the
face browser and there is no where to type a username in.
When this happens I use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to login and kill the offending
gdm-simple-greeter process.
This will then restart gdm-simple-greeter and allow me to login to X.
