this is the same thing that happens to the window chooser and "show
desktop"-button.
It has been fixed in gtk2-engines-ubuntulooks and since it is based on the
clearlooks code, maybe it can be backported. The one that made the
gtk2-engines-ubuntulooks code should probably look in to this.
