It's a GConf key controlling whether or not nautilus shows the desktop
folder over the background on the root window.

What is show_desktop? I grepped through Nautilus for "show_desktop" and
"show-desktop" and didn't find anything.

Is this still an issue? I recently found and fixed an issue where
Nautilus was sending the wrong signal, so maybe that fixed this?
