Failure reported during dpkg configuration of gdm:

Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that
you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit...


I get the same error if I, for example, run sudo gconftool --get 
/system/http_proxy/port from a console - so it appears to be some sort of 
permissions issue when I run as root.

However, if I ssh in to the laptop and then run sudo dpkg it works OK.
