I was using totem-gstreamer (-xine not installed). gstreamer properties was set to Autodetect for output and ALSA for input. with the USB camera selected as soundcard, totem and gxine both play audio correctly (with esd running and not running, and Autodetect in the settings.) I'm afraid I can't

Are you using System> Preferences> Sound> Default sound card to select the new webcam? What happens if you select it after hotplugging it (do both gxine and totem play audible volume correctly)? -- totem won't start after new audio device is added https://launchpad.net/bugs/44596 -- desktop-bugs

Do you use totem-gstreamer or totem-xine? In case of the former does this also happen if you change the audio output in gstreamer-properties to ALSA (sounds like you're using esd)? ** Changed in: totem (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Ubuntu Desktop Bugs Status: Unconfirmed => Needs
