I cam confirm this bug. I'm using Xubuntu 9.10 with the latest updates
installed.
The autoload subtitle option is activated. I also noticed that totem freezes
only if I try to open a video file by double clicking it.
If I first open totem and then open the movie from Movie-Open it doesn't
I performed a backtrace.

Yes, the same thing. Totem freezes when you are trying to open the film
when the 'Automatically load subtitle files when movie is loaded' option
is checked in preferences and there is a *.srt file in the same dir as a
film file and with the same name.
