I had to "reset to default" the color option in the "Edit" > "Preferences" >
"Display".
The "hue" value was set to the left side of the screen.
How did it happens is for me a sort of mystery. I can just mention that
I untick recently the option "Show visual effect when an audio file is
played" in
I'm seeing the same thing on a June 2009 MacBook Pro (though in my case
the comparison base was mplayer, not kaffeine). If I play a video in
mplayer after boot, it comes up in normal colours. If I then play it in
totem, it comes up in weird colours, and after that mplayer does the
same thing.
