This is a duplicate of bug #45421. I can confirm that gnome-cups-icon sometimes eats CPU cycles. On my system (with Dapper) it's 100% right now. I've just done a dist- upgrade, which installed new versions of gnome-panel , gnome-panel-data, and update-manager, among others. Killing gnome-panel
