pdlethbridge - do you have the PulseAudio applet installed? It gives you
a greater control over your input/output devices.
Perhaps future versions of Ubuntu should have this installed by default.

I have attempted to up grade to 9.10 from a wonderfully running 9.04 with out

successfully got my tv card to show the picture but I still don't

Just a final thought on the matter - I had been having trouble off and
on with my dmrc file. It kept losing it's chmod settings since Hardy
days, and this time no matter what I did, the error message kept popping
up periodically.
Looking at the properties of both my dmrc file and the home director
I figured that would be the answer, as I suspected it from the start.
What the heck, I wanted to update to ext4 and Grub2 on that partition
anyway.
All meaningful files are kept on a separate usb hard drive, and I can

Christopher,
Your description sound like a problem with the installation. Might I
suggest a fresh install? So long as you can't boot into the correct
kernel, you can't get the right sound drivers running.

Frans, if you know how, please check to see if the slmodemd daemon is
running. If it is running., you need to shut it off. If you don't know
how to do that, let me know and I'll write up a description.

There were a pile of messages, but the one that stuck out was a mountall

Here it is, but it's the Grub2 version on my other (working) partition,
which is the system is booting. I don't expect the menu.lst on the other
is doing much of anything.

Hmmm, ok, so the kernel is there... can we see the /boot/grub/menu.lst
file?
Also, can you elaborate on "I cannot boot into 2.6.31 at all". What do
you do to start booting that kernel and what error messages come up?

There are several 2.6.31 files in /boot. I'm attaching config - maybe
the one you want.
Also: abi, initrd.img, System.map, vmcoreinfo and vmlinuz, all 2.6.31.
The older kernel files are there as well.

The dmesg is for booting into 2.6.28. I am more curious about why you
can't boot into the 2.6.31 kernel. Maybe the kernel image got placed in
the wrong directory? Check the /boot directory for the 2.6.31 kernel
image.

Christopher,
The problem is due to a faulty upgrade to 9.10. You are still using the
Jaunty kernel (2.6.28) instead of the Karmic kernel (2.6.31). Try
running 'sudo update-grub' and reboot. Note that you may still have to
unmute the devices in the mixer controls after rebooting.

FYI - I ran and submitted audio tests from System Testing on both

the other passed every test.
