This problem seems to have been fixed in the meantime, the Garmin is now
automounted when in USB Mass Storage mode. I didn't notice it right away
because it takes quite some time until that happens, but it happens
eventually. Thanks guys.

Yes, I'm very sure I'm running Gnome. This is a Karmic Netbook Remix, installed
from the release candidate CD (and updated).

Can you confirm that you are running GNOME? Does this happen with other
USB storage devices (like USB sticks) as well?
devkit-disks looks fine. Can you please do this:
* Disconnect the garmin
* Open a Terminal and do "gvfs-mount -oi"
* Connect the garmin, wait some 10 seconds
* Press Cont
