The bug is old and Ubuntu changed quite a lot since, there has also been
no activity here nor similar reports. Closing since we believe the issue
as described is deprecated but feel free to file a new report if you
still have problems in recent Ubuntu versions.

Yes, it would be nice if, upon connecting media with photos (flash
cards, USB sticks, cameras, etc.), the option to "Open with Digikam"
were in the list of options.

It should list the other options normally listed alongside F-Spot eg. 'Do
nothing', 'Open in Nautilus'.

digikam should probably claim to support cameras in its desktop entry
then, the issue is not an hundredpapercut in any case since it's an
issue only for people uninstalling the default installation softwares
