OK, point a) can be fixed in the new one, but b) cannot, it's the basic
design of that new sound control.
(I wondered anyway why it was moved into the notification area, as
recently the pidgin icon was moved out of the notification area saying
that it is bad UI to have that in the notification are
the applet is deprecated by the one using pulseaudio, please open
reports for the things you don't like about the new applet, but the old
one is not going back.
