I have the same problem...
I wonder if the Grab the current window option isn't actually grabbing
a reference to itself, and since that window disappears when you take
the screenshot then no screenshot is generated.

Trying to take a screenshot of the firefox window with borders -
application dies. Without borders - similar results as in screenshot
attached to Post #2. Adding a delay makes it work correctly.

I can confirm that. I have intermittent behaviour when it comes to
taking a screenshot of the current window that includes the window
borders: if the take screenshot window doesn't overlap the current
window, it fails completely; if the take screenshot window overlaps
the current window, it works

Bruno's problem sounds slightly different than mine. ALT+PrintScreen
always works for me. And when a window only screenshot is taken using
the menu method (as opposed to ALT+PrintScrn), if it works at all, it
always gets the top left corner of the desktop, whether the screenshot
tool's window is
I have found that if I add a short delay, say 5 seconds, that it will
work normally on my systems.

Awesome, thanks jimbob! That worked perfectly. I'm not sure why I didn't
try that option before... but I think the first time I saw the dialog,
my eyes skimmed over that option and promptly dismissed it as
unimportant, so I never thought about using it after that. :)
