I think this might have been actually caused by problems with my intel
drivers causing me to boot up via Recovery Mode and doing a "startx." I
don't think all of the keyring stuff was started correctly.
Either way, this issue has resolved itself via upgrades.

Thank you for your bug report. Do you use auotlogin and unlock your
keyring when starting empathy? Does it work if you unlock it with some
other application, ie seahorse or log in gdm or stop mission-control-5
and restart empathy too?
