In fact, now (as of beta1), it's even worse/irritating:
When I use the keyboard to adjust brightness, that works, but is
presumable handled by the machine itself/BIOS. However, at each
keystroke, the ibus tray icon changes it's visibility from hidden to
shown and back.

I confirm this bug on my thinkpad T510.
A workaround is to change brightness in text-mode VT (ie. crtl+alt+f1, change
brightness, ctrl+alt+f7 to switch back to X.)
The lack of OSD is a new development since 26/02, I think it requires a
separate bug report.
