Exactly same thing happen to me. Ubuntu 6.06, GDM 2-14.10-0ubuntu1.
Second login always failed, so there is a problem.

.Xauthority before trying to log-in again make it work? Does it happen
without running any application during the first session? If not could
you note what application is writting the .Xauthority? Do you use some
KDE applicatio

I'm not sure the bug still exists. I haven't tried reproducing since I
reported it. I will try again and let you know.
