the box layout depends of the wm used, the one is the screenshot is the
compiz one (doesn't allow giving names to workspaces since viewports are
being used there)

That makes sense, on Karmic I am using compiz, and on Lucid in my vm I
use metacity.

I can confirm that this is the behavior in Karmic, but it looks like
they have redone the whole preferences box in Lucid recently. Can you
try updating Lucid and see if you still get this?
