I've tried using firefox with the Adobe flash plugin with flash, and
banshee and gnome player with .mp3 files. Instead of sound, I just get
static.

When you attempt to play particular file formats, what happens? Do you
get an error, or does the player appear to play and you hear nothing?
What applications are you using to play audio?
