Shut Down instead of Switch Off is still ambiguous and unfamiliar.
Instead of reverting back, take the opportunity to correct. What are you
doing by selecting that option - asking the OS to close (just as you

Per my updated Lucid, Shut Down is appearing in the menu applet, but
the dialog box that appears asking you to confirm your action still uses

The confirmation dialog still use Switch Off in both title and button

Ah, yes; I see that now in the confirmation dialog.
And yes, after upgrading gnome-session today, the Ctrl-Alt-Del dialog is
fixed.
And now I've just found another instance of this in gdm; opening a new

I'm an en_US speaker who supports this change. Switch Off just feels
very strange, and it's not immediately obvious what it does. Turn Off
would be the best of the alternatives--when talking about any electronic
device (phones, tvs, etc.), we say I'm going to turn off the tv.
