NOTE: This bug report is about the fact that the dialogue about the
server failure is garbled.

When the system starts up, the X server starts and briefly shows a
garbled display: it looks like there is a mismatch between the display
data in the video memory and the video mode, so that there is a kind
of horizontally stripy garbled image in part of the screen.

Then shortly afterwards the X server terminates again and I go back
into text mode and get a dialogue box offering me various logfiles;
this dialogue box is itself semi-garbled:

The textual components are legible. But the dialogue border is
displayed as a sequence of bizarre accented characters. For example,
the box saying `The X server is now disabled ...' has, on the top
edge,
   U' o" i^ ( U' o" C, )x26 U' o" e'
where U' is U-with-acute-accent, o" is o-with-umlaut, C, is
C-with-cedille, etc. This string is longer than the 80-column width
and causes cursor positioning errors.

This particular install is a clean dapper install from the released
i386 d-i CD, upgraded to edgy by editing sources.list and updated
every few days. Everything is up to date except that apt has held
back a bunch of python packages. I have to install with
debian-installer/framebuffer=false to avoid an incompatibility between
the framebuffer driver and my hardware.

Ian.
