Received the following updates today: ibus ibus-gtk libibus1 linux-libc-
dev python-ibus
Not sure if they have anything to do with it, but I am able to set up
the account as before and connect to Google Talk.

I'm running the same version now as you, on 10.04 Beta, but with a
slightly newer kernel. (2.6.32.16). I can add google talk accounts.

I haven't been able to put any Google Talk accounts only since I put the
Beta1 on. It was a clean install. I was able to add accounts without
problem in Karmic.

This sounds like an error on Google's side or your network. I can
successfully add gtalk accounts. Try again later and google some guides
about how to add accounts to Empathy.
