I have the same problem -- I'm not sure if it's anything to do with it but when Gnome is loading the fourth icon which used to appear on the start-up splash screen no longer does. It was the one with a box, a CD and something else (only appeared very quickly). Could something I've installed on top

I have the same problem in Ubuntu Dapper. When I put a blank cd in the writer, desktop icon and nautilus burning dialog appear for just a few seconds, and then is like the writer was empty. -- CD / DVD volume isn't recognized by Hal https://launchpad.net/bugs/55000 -- desktop-bugs mailing list
