@Martin: Even though the indicator applet does not have that problem,
g-v-c is just one click away from the indicator applet, and still needs
fixing.
Try it: start e g rythmbox, then open g-v-c. Slide the application
volume down to zero. The mute button is then automatically checked, but
it is not

The new volume indicator applet in Lucid does not have a mute button
that is automatically turned on and does not have this behavior.
