I also have this problem. As far as I can tell, I have disabled a non

I noticed I had a lot of lag during login when I installed the preload
package, removing it fixed it for me. I wonder if that's one of the
causes of this issue?

Don't know if my problems add anything positive to this but disabling my
floppy drive speeds up logging into the gnome desktop to normal. But now
grub 2 has slowed right down which was the reason i enabled my non-
existant floppy drive :(

Is it possible to identify the cause for slow down from boot chart?

I have this problem too, and actually filed a bug report before coming
across this one (559577).
After GDM login, a blank desktop wallpaper appears, followed by some
hard drive activity and then the log-in sound. There is then a 20
second pause without any harddrive activity, after which the
the issue there is not likely a gdm one, the bootcharts seem to not
having interesting informations but let's reassign on udisks for now,
it's rather likely udisks or gvfs which looks for devices on session
start than gdm there

I saw the delay of several seconds in nautilus starting up and
displaying the desktop, disabling floppy in the bios did indeed remove
the delay, is there anything helpful i could add to move this from
'incomplete'?

I have no floppy drive and BIOS has no options to disable it!!
After GDM login, need around an minute to settle down. Not sure if it's
related to couchdb, most of times gwibber or local couch crashes

no, it is still no good. i have a memory card reader (not usb, internal)
and that is the only device connected. i also have to say that memory
card was working in jaunty but after karmic upgrade, it is not working
anymore.

ok, it is solved for me also. my boot time is good now. i had a look inside of
my pc and i found out that there is a little problem with the cable of the
memory card reader. i fixed it, now my boot performance improved noticebly and
also my memory card is working now.
however, i think this
disabled the floppy drive but still no good for me.

@hourna:
Try disabling other things you know are not necessary on BIOS, and try
unplugging usb devices. I unplugged my USB gamepad too and the boot was REALLY
faster. I guess this is a hal bug, or whatever handles the devices you plug
into the computer.

I already fixed the bug, thanks to people on ubuntuforums.

The reason was that i had in the BIOS an inexistent floppy drive enabled. After
disabling it the load takes about 3 seconds, in contrast to the 15~25secs
before.
But i think it still
I have the same problem and actually see similar behaviour.
I have docky installed and after loging in it almost immediately starts. Just
my desktop and my panels take quite a while to appear.
I upgraded from karmic to lucid.

I still have the same slow load, but I noticed something today, i don't know if
it's relevant. Immediately after typing my password and when i'm waiting for
the desktop to load, i can summon gnome do and move around the cube with
compiz...
I'd like this bug to be taken into account, because we

I'm also experiencing a considerably slower boot compared to about one
week ago. Now my boot time is about 42 to 45 seconds whereas it had been
in the neighborhood of 25 seconds or less.
Basically I get about 20 seconds of blank, black screen with a blinking
cursor in the upper left hand corner,
thank you for your bug report, could you install bootchart and
pybootchartgui and reboot twice and copy the image you get in
/var/cache/bootchart to the bug?
