This has not been solved or has it been solved elsewhere? I'm running
into exactly the same problem since I started using googlecalendars in
evolution...

In my case the problem was Evolution. imported old mails, and it
finished with 4000 tasks (mails ended there). Deleting the tasks in
Evolution solved my problem. Was veeery slow, almost 4 hours.

Sorry, I did not yet do the necessary steps to obtain a backtrace. But I
can add the following information which might hopefully help.
Sometimes, Evolution randomly decides to do some stuff in the Background
and then takes up a lot of CPU time and produces a high number of disk
accesses. This

following the instructions at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and upload the backtrace
(as an attachment) to the bug report. This will greatly help us in
tracking down your problem.
