Anyways, shouldn't Nautilus check if it can read/write to .local/ and if
not, provide meaningful error message?

I had the same problem. Solved it by executing sudo chown -R
$USER.$USER .local/ in my home directory. Is this okay?
My .local/ diretory was owned by root.root. In the .local/ there were
references to google-earth. Maybe there is a problem with that package?
