I also have this problem. It always happens. It might be related to the
bug about usernames 8 chars.
Here's a trace of the syslog when I try to do this:

Workaround: edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf
In the greeter section
# comment out Include=usernames
IncludeAll=true
MinimalUID = 1000 # check in passed if this is OK for you
Exclude =users you want to exclude

I get the same on boot, it boots without problems but then i get the gdm
dialog without a user list, so i can't login into my graphical desktop
