Just to point out that mentioned workaround doesn't work on some systems because LANG environment variable has uppercase letters on UTF8 part and menu cache file has lowercase letters in UTF8 part. For example: desktop.${LANG}.cache translates into: desktop.en_US.UTF-8.cache and system expects:

I use lucid 64bit on my desktop and a 32bit version on my laptop. At first i had this problem only on the 64bits version but now, maybe after an update, i also have this problem on my laptop with the 32bits version of lucid. The workaround presented by marcelo also works for the 32 bits version.

Regardless of whether the behaviour itself is a bug, the undocumented nature of the solution is definitely a bug. I spent several hours attempting to discover the cause of this issue, before stumbling upon this bug report from google. I would recommend that a simple wrapper around /usr/share/gnome

Same problem here and it is related to menu cache file (/usr/share/applications/desktop.${LANG}.cache). When a new package is installed using dpkg, the latter calls /usr/share /gnome-menus/update-gnome-menus-cache script which updates the cache file and the menu item is displayed without problems.
