and installing latest official AMD Catalyst 10.12 (v.8.801, kernel
2.6.32-27-generic) bug disappeared. Is there possible that was AMD/ATI-
driver-related bug?

Not an issue anymore. It just dissappeared after Karmic clean install. I
will comment if it is an issue for Maverick, but I doubt it. I just
didn't upgrade yet.

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid). I can`t install Maverick for now to test if this
bug is still an issue, any other workaround?

does work
sudo echo -n VALUE /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness

no luck with g-p-m anyway.
