Fixed in Ubuntu 10.10. kernel 2.6.35-22-generic, works fine now on my HP
Probook 4710s, which had the same issue in Lucid.

Hi Robert, I'm sorry you're having difficulties in applying my
workaround to your environment.
I suggest you try to find out whether halevt functions properly by
running it in the foreground:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/halevt stop
$ sudo -u halevt halevt -fig plugdev

But changing the brightness with the hotkeys still does not, although I
have halevt installed, the halevt xml modified as you have written, with
the brightness.sh path changed according to my setup. And sudo
brightness up and down manually do work.

This bug affects me too, on a HP Probook 4710s. I have tried the ideas
you've suggested - something happened, because the brightness
notification appeared once, but since than, it does not work. So it
worked on the first keypress - displayed the notification.

I now have a workaround for the brightness hotkeys (not for the other
two problems, though):
1) Create a script brightness.sh:
#!/bin/bash
# Valid input?
if [ $1 != up -a $1 != down ]; then exit 1; fi
# Current brightness
CURRENT=`grep current /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness |
Well, don't place the script in your home directory, of course. I'm sure
you'll find a more appropriate place.
