My problem was resolved in the released version of Edgy.

Shouldn't it be upgraded to Critical, gparted being absolutely crucial
for the Ubuntu installation?

Perhaps it isn't so easy to just upgrade GParted to the new 0.3.1
version. I was going to try to run it under Edgy instead of from the
GParted livecd to see if it was still fixed even with Edgy's different
windowing system.
Unfortunately the only dependency is libgtkmm which the Edgy beta has,
