To stop of hybernating or suspending please try this as workaround for
gpm:
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/gnome-power-
manager/general/use_time_for_policy false

Same problem here.
I can bypass gnome-power-manager hybernating or suspending my machine by
killing it just before I disconnect power and re-starting it shortly after
power has been disconnected.
