Glad you were able to resolve this! With the change to gnome-shell in
newer releases I'm guessing this is no longer relevant.

Been stuck with it for a couple of days too, in the end i found the
solution:
gconf-editor and under desktop-gnome-background-draw background
enable it

Totally don't know how it changed from skip to zip, but I'm considering
After deleting bunch of configs in home folder and reboot problem got
fixed. I think now it's impossible to track what exactly caused it.
